Another family now has a home in North Georgia, thanks to the gifts and hard work of many people. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry, and the Madison County chapter has purchased a 10-acre tract in Comer on which to build a series of homes for people in need. At the dedication of the second completed home, Sunday, April 13, Rachel Slack received the traditional Bible and house keys. Enjoying the new home with Rachel will be her two daughters Risha and Nicole.

Building materials were purchased through a $10,000 grant from Lowe’s, and a number of churches and businesses provided labor teams for the project. But the real story of Habitat for Humanity houses is that of individual volunteers giving their time and effort to make life better for others. David Des Jardines and Cathy Pentz, the directors of the project, told me they have about 300 people who may be involved, in one way or another, in raising a new home. This home is part of Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program, which seeks to involve women in the construction of the homes.
