The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Madison County was held on May 2–3 and raised $92,616.57 for the Society’s research, education, advocacy and service programs. The Relay For Life brought out 900 participants on 25 teams. During the Survivors Lap, 190 survivors circled the track and were recognized for winning the battle against cancer. A total of 1,900 luminaria bags circled the track in honor of those touched by cancer and in memory of those lost to the disease.
Union Baptist Church was the top fundraising team, raising $16,263.61. Sponsors for the event included Presenting Sponsors Dr. Robert Hooper and Adams Primary Care. Additional sponsors were Tomorrow’s Homes, Hill’s Custom Cabinets, AT&T Telecom Pioneers, Re-New Construction, BW Heating & Air, T.H. Evans, C&M Electric, Carey’s Tax Service, Union Baptist Church, Fox’s Pizza Den, Arnold’s Abbey Carpet and Flooring, Madison County Hardware and Building Supply, Marketplace of Danielsville, Contour’s Express, the Bread Basket and Colbert Pharmacy.
How Donations Are Spent
The American Cancer Society consists of more than two million Americans united to conquer cancer through programs of research, education, advocacy, and service. The dollars raised from the American Cancer Society Relay For Life are used in the following ways:
- 82% – Mission-based Activities
- 17% – Prevention & Education: programs that provide the public and health professionals with information and education to prevent cancer occurrence or to reduce the risk of developing cancer
- 12% – Patient Services: programs to assist cancer patients and their families to ease the burden of cancer for them
- 14% – Detection / Treatment: programs that are directed at finding cancer before it is clinically apparent, and provide information and education about cancer treatments for a cure, recurrence, symptom management, and pain control
- 39% – Research: financial support provided to academic institutions and scientists to seek new knowledge about the causes, prevention, and cure of cancer, and to conduct epidemiological and behavioral studies.
- 18% – Fundraising, Management, and General
These include programs to secure charitable financial support for the Society’s programs, including participation at fundraising events, materials for soliciting donations, maintenance of donor records, and fundraising volunteer recruitment and training; direction of the overall affairs of the Society through executive, financial, and administrative services
